Lack of sleep lowers the production of a hormone called cortisol. This results in an increase in appetite which is often why sleep deprivation can lead to a higher intake of calories. Insufficient sleep will also slow down metabolism and lead to fewer calories being burned. You should be getting at least 7 hours sleep a night to keep your metabolism working efficiently.
