sleep is neededA recently published by researchers at the University of Warwick and University College London with 10,000 participants, has found that the risk of death from cardiovascular disease doubles for those suffering from constant lack of sleep. Chronic sleep deprivation results in higher blood pressure which increases the risk of a cardiac infarction or a stroke.

But this risk was much more pronounced for women. Women who sleep less than five hours a night are twice as likely to develop hypertension than men who slept for five hours a night. The findings indicate that individuals who cut their sleeping to five hours or less a night face a 1.7-fold increased risk in death from all causes. Researchers believe a lack of sleep may be also associated with the increased risk of gaining weight and developing type II diabetes.

Leptin and ghrelin are the hormones that play a role in weight loss or weight gain. Leptin helps in controlling our appetite while ghrelin helps in stimulating our appetite.

When we don’t get enough sleep, it will be a disaster to our body. When we have lack of sleep, our body responds to it and produces more ghrelin hormone which is appetite inducing. Therefore, not only our sleep affects but our appetite will also be increased.
